Autogenics, Acupuncture & Chronic Pain

Autogenic relaxation techniques may augment the analgesic effect of acupuncture treatment according to a new report. In a randomised controlled trial, the use of autogenic relaxation during acupuncture treatment for pain was investigated. Twenty seven patients attending an out-patient acupuncture clinic, all suffering from chronic pain of various origins, were asked to listen to a tape either of music or of autogenic relaxation suggestions during acupuncture treatment. Measurements pre and post treatment were taken of perceived pain, and comparisons between the two tapes used and a no tape group was made. The results revealed a trend towards benefit from the use of an autogenic relaxation tape during acupuncture treatment, and although the study group was too small for this to be significant , the results have prompted further research into the integration of relaxation techniques with acupuncture.

Acupuncture for Chronic Pain - A Systematic Review

If you follow the news regarding acupuncture we see quite a bit about acupuncture being a placebo effect. Clinically this does not appear to be the case, but studies often show conflicting results between sham and "real" acupuncture groups. This is discussed in some detail, in my article "Is Acupuncture Chinese...?". This systematic review was done in the hopes of showing conclusively that acupuncture is not mere placebo and that the research community should move on to more important studies that help to advance the field. From these reviews it was clear that the evidence supports acupuncture as an effective modality for the treatment of chronic pain. Future studies should simply take the positive effect of acupuncture on pain as a given, and work towards finding the best treatment protocols and most efficient methods of treatment for a given origin of pain.
